Beauty experts on Fresha, the world’s leading beauty and wellness booking platform, are urging holidaymakers to rethink last-minute waxing appointments before heading to the airport.
According to specialists on Fresha, waxing should ideally be booked 48–72 hours before departure, not the day before flying, particularly ahead of long-haul travel or trips to hot climates.
With spring and Easter travel approaching, beauty professionals say many clients are squeezing in treatments just hours before take-off, unaware that it could lead to irritation, ingrown hairs and unwanted pigmentation before they even reach their destination.
Why Waxing Too Close To Travel Can Backfire
Waxing removes hair from the root while also lifting the outermost layer of skin. For up to 48 hours afterwards, the skin barrier is temporarily more vulnerable.
This means:
- Pores remain open
- Mild inflammation is present
- The skin is more reactive to friction and dryness
Aircraft cabins typically operate at humidity levels as low as 10–20%, which can further dehydrate freshly waxed skin. Combined with tight clothing, long periods of sitting and temperature changes, this increases the likelihood of irritation and ingrown hairs, particularly around the bikini line and underarms.
Travellers flying to sunny destinations may also face increased UV sensitivity on newly waxed areas, raising the risk of pigmentation or burning.
Beauty expert Danielle Louise on Fresha, the world’s leading beauty and wellness booking platform
“Waxing is a brilliant treatment for holidays, but timing is everything. When you wax, you’re not just removing hair; you're also exfoliating the skin. That leaves it slightly more delicate for a short period.
Flying exposes your skin to very dry air and long periods of friction from clothing, which can trigger irritation, bumps or ingrown hairs if you’ve waxed too close to travel. We recommend booking waxing appointments at least 48 to 72 hours before flying so the skin barrier has time to settle.
It’s a small change in timing that can make a big difference to how your skin looks and feels when you arrive.”
What Experts Recommend Before Flying
- Beauty professionals advise:
- Book waxing 2–3 days before departure
- Avoid tight clothing during travel
- Keep the area lightly moisturised
- Avoid pools, saunas and direct sun exposure immediately after waxing
The Wider Travel Beauty Mistake
Fresha experts also warn that waxing isn’t the only treatment affected by travel timing.
Last-minute lash extensions, intensive facials or keratin treatments booked too close to departure can also react unpredictably to cabin air, humidity changes and sun exposure.
Danielle Louise on the Fresha platform adds:
“Pre-holiday beauty prep is about planning, not panic-booking. When treatments are timed properly, clients arrive feeling confident rather than dealing with avoidable irritation.”
