According to data from Google Trends, online searches for “Travel hacks” recently hit their highest level in five years, showing a rising demand for money-saving travel tips.

Over on TikTok, the hashtag #TravelHacks has now amassed almost 600,000 posts on the social media platform.

With many people turning to social media to uncover money-saving vacation tips, the travel experts over at
Westgate Vacation Packages have unpacked some of the trendiest money-saving hacks on the social media site just in time for summer.

Packing cubes

On TikTok, the hashtag #PackingHacks has now amassed nearly 63,000 posts as people search for smarter ways to pack and avoid additional luggage fees.

According to the experts at Westgate Vacation Packages, one of the best ways to reduce extra luggage fees is to invest in some compression packing cubes.

These are an affordable way to create some extra space in your suitcase while also reducing the risk of overpacking.

The luggage organizers transform your luggage into easy-to-pack parcels, helping to keep your suitcase light.

#PackingCubes has now amassed almost 32,000 TikTok posts, highlighting their popularity on the social media platform.

The '5-4-3-2-1' packing hack

With packing hacks taking over TikTok, there’s one in particular that has really captured people’s attention.

In the viral TikTok shared by Alison Lumbatis, the '5-4-3-2-1' packing method is all about packing the essentials.

In the video, Lumbatis explains: “All you have to do is pick out five tops, four coordinating bottoms, three pairs of shoes, two layering pieces and one of anything else like a dress, pajamas, a hat, belt, or any other accessories you might need.”

Often people overpack in a panic when going away on vacation, but this hack is a great way to help create a versatile travel wardrobe with fewer items.

This means that you’ll end up with a lighter suitcase and can easily avoid the risk of any excess luggage fees.

The '3-3-3' method

Another TikTok packing method, created by Rachel Spencer, has also recently skyrocketed in popularity.

Similar to the viral '5-4-3-2-1' packing hack, the '3-3-3' method is all about packing three tops, three bottoms, and three pairs of shoes.

This makes it easier to mix and match outfits, creating a more versatile vacation wardrobe.

In the TikTok, Spencer ultimately manages to create 19 different outfit combinations just by using the '3-3-3' packing method.

Taking a more mindful approach to packing is one of the easiest ways to save money when going on vacation.

Overpacking in a panic can be costly and also increases the risk of you forgetting items at home. This is why it’s so important to create an adaptable outfit selection to reduce the risk of excess luggage fees.

Travel on Tuesdays or Wednesdays

Tuesdays and Wednesdays are often considered the best days to travel, as flight costs tend to be significantly lower than on Fridays or weekends.

This is because there is a higher demand for weekend flights, largely because it’s often not possible to travel midweek for some families due to work and school responsibilities.

If possible, choosing to travel midweek can be a fantastic way to save money, particularly during peak vacation seasons. Choosing to travel outside of peak hours, such as booking early-morning or late-night flights, is another useful way to cut down on costs.

Opting for early-morning flights is another great travel hack, as these are less likely to be disrupted by knock-on delays throughout the day.

When flights are delayed, people often spend more money on last-minute accommodation and travel changes, so it’s important to book early-morning flights where possible.

Roll, don’t fold

On TikTok, #FoldingHacks has now totaled almost 17,000 posts.

This is often one of the most overlooked travel hacks, but how you pack your suitcase is actually really important when it comes to reducing excess costs.

As well as helping to organize your suitcase, rolling your clothes can actually create more space.

Rolling can also help to prevent any wrinkles on your clothes, making it a useful tip for any vacation packing.

Bundle your bookings

VacPacs, also known as vacation packages, have become a popular way of saving money when booking vacations. These packages are offered to enable guests to experience their dream trip while also keeping costs down.

Booking a VacPac can help to cut down on additional booking fees while enabling you to enjoy exclusive add-ons, such as room upgrades and attraction tickets.

Use flight trackers

#FlightHacks is another popular hashtag on TikTok, with almost 15,000 posts.

One of the best money-saving flight hacks is to use flight trackers. This is a trend that has rapidly picked up traction in recent months, with worldwide Google searches for "flight price trackers" rising by a whopping 800% from June 2021 to June 2026.

Google Flights, Hopper, and Skyscanner are all excellent ways to keep an eye on and compare flight prices. Using flight trackers regularly will notify you of any price drops, either through email or text, allowing you to take advantage of the best deals.

Certain flight price tracking apps, such as Hopper, use advanced algorithms to detect whether prices are likely to rise or fall in the coming weeks or months. These features can help you determine whether it’s best to book your trip now or in the next few weeks in order to save as much money as possible.

The spokesperson for Westgate Vacation Packages commented on these money-saving hacks:

“Cost is often the most off-putting factor for many people when it comes to booking their dream vacation, which is why it’s so important to take advantage of cost-cutting travel hacks, especially with summer just around the corner.

"It's really easy for travel costs to quickly spiral, especially during summer when demand for flights and accommodation is at its highest.

"However, what's interesting is that some of the biggest savings often come from the simplest changes.

"Bundling flights, accommodation, and attraction tickets into one package, rather than booking each one separately, is another overlooked travel hack that can end up saving you hundreds.

"It's really important to take advantage of any bundle or VacPac offers, especially if you're booking trips over the summer.

"Based on the TikTok hashtag data and these recent Google search increases, it's clear that people are being more strategic when it comes to vacation preparation, whether that's packing more efficiently, using flight trackers, or opting to travel mid-week.

"For example, Google searches for 'Midweek flights' have increased worldwide by a staggering 200% since 2021. People are no longer just looking for deals on accommodation and hotels. Instead, there's a trend in which people are reshifting their entire trip to save as much money as possible."
