Sufficient and Secure Lorry Parking

Following today’s publication of the government’s new National Planning Policy Framework (National Planning Policy Framework: draft text for consultation), Ben Fletcher, Chief Executive of business group Logistics UK said:

“Logistics UK welcomes the government's decision to introduce a dedicated Freight and Logistics (E3) policy within the National Planning Policy Framework, recognising the vital role the sector plays in supporting economic growth and keeping supply chains moving.

“The new policy includes more references to logistics and reflects several key recommendations made by Logistics UK during the consultation process, including support for locating logistics development close to strategic transport networks, provision of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and an explicit requirement for sufficient and secure lorry parking.

“We also welcome the recognition that development of roadside facilities should be supported where it meets an evidenced need to improve road user safety and welfare, expands access to electric vehicle charging and alternative fuels, and address shortages in overnight lorry parking. These measures will help reduce inappropriate parking and ensure drivers have access to the facilities they need.

“In addition, the draft framework recognises the importance of improving driver welfare and security, supporting the transition to new vehicle technologies and reducing environmental impacts through better facility design and climate mitigation measures. It also acknowledges the operational realities of the logistics sector, including the need for some facilities to operate at night.

“While we will continue to advocate for stronger recognition of logistics as critical national infrastructure and greater protection for existing logistics land, the inclusion of a dedicated freight and logistics policy represents a significant step forward. The draft framework is a positive move towards a planning system that better supports the needs of the UK's logistics sector and the businesses, communities and supply chains that depend upon it.”

Logistics UK is one of the UK’s biggest business groups, representing logistics businesses which are vital to keeping the UK trading, and more than seven million people directly employed in the making, selling and moving of goods. Logistics UK supports, shapes and stands up for safe and efficient logistics, and is the only business group which represents the whole industry, with members from the road, rail, water and air industries, as well as the buyers of freight services such as retailers and manufacturers whose businesses depend on the efficient movement of goods.
