We found the Restaurant L’Escale at 4 Rue de la Mer 62179 Escalles by accident. Having driven through this well maintained French village many times it was one of those things we might do one day.
The day came and on entering we were greeted with quiet professional courtesy, a table found and efficient service from the start.
It might just be my opinion, however I believe there is a particular kind of hospitality you find along the Côte d’Opale — a blend of Flemish warmth, French coastal calm, and that understated professionalism that never feels forced. The restaurant at Hôtel L’Escale captures this perfectly.
From the moment we stepped inside, the welcome was gentle and genuine. We did not have a reservation, it was busy, but not cramped. Dogs were welcomed.
The staff carry themselves with the kind of politeness that isn’t performative — just quietly attentive, instinctively present, and quick to make you feel settled. Service here is not rushed, not mechanical; it’s paced with the rhythm of the region, where meals are meant to be enjoyed rather than endured.
The menu leans confidently into authentic northern French cooking. The menu is rooted in tradition: carbonnade de boeuf, regional cheeses like Maroilles, and hearty “fait maison” dishes that honour the terroir. Everything is prepared from fresh ingredients, and you can taste that honesty in the food — nothing over‑complicated, nothing dressed up beyond what it needs to be.
Seafood is where L’Escale truly shines. The Côte d’Opale is a coastline defined by its tides, its fishing heritage, and its proximity to the Channel, and the restaurant reflects that. Their poissons and plateaux de fruits de mer are generous, cleanly presented, and unmistakably local. Shellfish, crustaceans, and optional additions like crab or lobster arrive with a sense of occasion, whether you’re dining alone, as a couple, or sharing a platter between friends.
Presentation throughout is thoughtful without being fussy. Plates arrive looking exactly as good as they taste — neat, colourful, and inviting. Drinks follow the same pattern: well‑chosen, well‑served, and complementary to the food rather than competing with it.
The location is convenient for exploration of the coast or on the way to Calais and parking is plenty in the surrounding area,

We thought the atmosphere was relaxed, familial, and unmistakably French. It’s the kind of eating experience where you can exhale after a day exploring Cap Blanc Nez. where conversations soften.
The staff’s calm professionalism sets the tone. On Sundays, when the restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner, it becomes a particularly pleasant place to end a weekend on the Opal Coast.
Hôtel L’Escale’s restaurant doesn’t try to reinvent anything. Instead, it delivers quality, tradition, and sincerity — and sometimes that’s exactly what you want. Good food, excellent service, polite staff, and a sense of place that stays with you long after you’ve left.
We left feeling relaxed, looked after and satisfied that we got much more than we expected.
