A fundamental shift is underway in wellness travel, moving away from highly structured, outcome-driven programmes and towards something more essential, time in nature.

Nature-based wellness travel is redefining the industry's future, and Synergy - The Retreat Show has placed it firmly at the centre of its 2026 vision.

Taking place in Istria, Croatia from 29 September to 2 October 2026, the three day event will bring together retreat leaders, practitioners, travel advisors, bespoke properties and leading wellness brands to explore how nature can be embedded into retreat programming, guest experience and commercial strategy.

Unveiling "The Healing Power of Nature" as its central theme this year, the world's only international trade show dedicated exclusively to wellness travel and the retreat sector highlights a clear shift in the industry, away from highly structured, outcome driven programmes and toward something more fundamental, time in nature as the foundation of the wellness experience.

At the heart of this shift is a growing recognition that nature is not simply a setting, but an active agent in wellbeing, one that operates across biology, psychology and human connection. Increasingly, industry leaders are not only observing this change, but designing around it.

The science underpinning nature based wellness is now well established. Studies published in Frontiers in Psychology (2019) show that as little as 20 minutes in a natural environment can significantly reduce cortisol levels, while the World Health Organisation has highlighted the role of green spaces in supporting mental and physical health. Beyond this, nature is increasingly understood to support something more foundational, nervous system regulation.

Jessica Brainch, Registered Psychologist and Founder of Find Your Wild, explains: "We cannot be well if our systems do not know how to experience safety. It is always step one. With guidance, and with wild spaces as our companion, guests have the opportunity to invite a state of regulation into their nervous systems."

She adds: "Spending time with nature brings us into the ecosystem in which we are designed to belong. When we are with nature, our systems respond to this inescapable and intimate relationship."

This shift is also being shaped by modern lifestyles. As digital overload increases, research shows that disconnection from highly stimulating environments supports reconnection to clarity, with time in nature linked to improvements in memory and cognitive function.

Adventure is emerging as a key part of this evolution. Laura Montesanti, Founder and Managing Director of Synergy - The Retreat Show, said: "Adventure and 'freedom retreats' are surging; journeys that blend movement, nature, and self-discovery, tapping into our deep need to feel alive and untethered.

"There's a growing understanding that true transformation happens when we step outside our comfort zones. Adventure has become a catalyst for healing, an invitation to push beyond our comfort zone, reconnect with our instincts and rediscover the power within."

This evolution is reflected in the design of nature-based wellness programmes, which are moving away from rigid itineraries towards more intuitive, accessible formats. Experiences such as horse-riding retreats, open-air breathwork and meditation, explorative journeys in remote or lesser travelled destinations, and outdoor contrast therapy and grounding practices are becoming increasingly prominent across the sector.

Alongside its experiential value, nature-based wellness presents a significant commercial opportunity. The Global Wellness Institute estimates wellness tourism expenditures reached nearly $894 billion in 2024, reflecting growing demand for travel experiences linked to wellbeing. Nature-led offerings often require less built infrastructure while delivering high perceived value and experiences.

With "The Healing Power of Nature" as its defining theme, Synergy 2026 reflects a broader industry evolution already underway, one that moves wellness beyond structured programmes and towards something more instinctive, grounded and fundamentally human.
