Watson Farley & Williams ("WFW") advised Rabobank, acting as lender, on the long-term financing of Nala Renewables' 50 MW/100 MWh Vuolijoki battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Finland.

The project is one of the largest BESS projects in Finland to date to enter construction and represents a significant milestone in the continued growth of the country's energy storage sector. Nala Renewables' Finnish BESS portfolio also comprises the 50 MW/100 MWh Kauhava and 100 MW/200 MWh Kärppiö projects.

Rabobank is a Dutch multinational banking and financial services company headquartered in Utrecht, Netherlands. Founded in 2020, London-based Nala Renewables is a global power and renewable energy investment platform focussed on generating sustainable and clean power using onshore wind, solar PV and battery storage. It currently has a 3 GW operational, in-construction and development portfolio of renewable energy projects, which it aims to increase to 10 GW by 2030.

The WFW London Energy team that advised Rabobank was led by Partner and London Projects Group Co-Head Jennifer Charles, supported by Senior Associate Jenny Burns and Associate Tara Goalen.

Jennifer commented: "We're delighted to have advised Rabobank on this important financing for Finland's BESS infrastructure. Having acted on many of Europe's largest BESS project financings to date, it's great to be expanding our in-sector footprint into the Nordic region".
