European Flight Strikes in July: Which Airports & Dates Are Most Affected?
Travellers to France, Italy, Spain, Finland and the Netherlands warned of major delays and cancellations throughout July
Global Work & Travel is today advising holidaymakers, digital nomads and gap year travellers to prepare for significant disruption as a series of air traffic control and airport worker strikes roll out across Europe this month.
Jessie Chambers, Senior Travel Advisor at Global Work & Travel, has issued a red flag warning for anyone planning to fly to - or over - affected countries, especially France, where airspace restrictions may impact non-French flights too.
“Even if you’re not flying into France, your flight might pass through French airspace,” said Chambers. “We’ve already seen major airlines forced to cancel or reroute hundreds of flights. Travellers need to act fast—check flights, speak to airlines, and prepare for delays.”
Key Disruption Dates
France
- National air traffic control strike: 3–4 July
- Up to 50% of flights cancelled or rerouted from airports including Paris-Orly, Marseille, Nice and Toulouse
- Overflights between UK and destinations such as Spain, Italy and Greece are affected
Italy & Spain
- Airport staff and baggage handlers are expected to strike on 10, 11 and 26 July
- Peak summer travel coincides with limited airport ground support and potential flight backlogs
Finland
- Finnair staff walkouts from 2–4 July expected to affect over 28,000 passengers
Netherlands
- KLM ground crews have threatened to strike on 9 July pending wage talks outcome
Advice to Travellers
Global Work & Travel is urging customers and independent travellers alike to take precautionary steps immediately:
- Check your flight status via airline apps and websites
- Plan alternative routes where possible, including rail options
- Travel with insurance that includes strike-related delays or cancellations
- Contact your employer or volunteer host if delays impact your arrival date
- Allow buffer time between flight connections and onward travel
“This kind of strike disruption is more than a delay – it can snowball into missed connections, rebooked accommodation, or even visa complications,” added Chambers. “It’s vital people don’t assume they’re unaffected just because their flight doesn’t land in a strike zone.”
EU Passenger Rights – What You’re Entitled To
Under EU Regulation EC261, travellers are entitled to:
- A full refund or rebooking in the event of cancellation
- Accommodation, meals, and transport while waiting
- Note: Strikes by air traffic controllers are typically classed as extraordinary circumstances, meaning cash compensation may not apply
Travel and aviation experts, including airline CEOs, have called for EU-level reform to prevent repeat annual chaos.
“We’re seeing the consequences of a fragmented European airspace,” said Chambers. “This isn’t just about staff pay disputes—it’s about a broken infrastructure that can’t cope with peak-season demand.”
